This is an exercise all my coaching clients do at the start of their journey. But why?
- BETTER OVERVIEW AND UNDERSTANDING: With a list like this you’ll have a clear understanding of what triggers stress in your dog. This knowledge is key to helping them lead a happier, calmer life.
- IDENTIFY STRESSORS THAT ARE WITHIN YOUR CONTROL: A stress list will help you identify and remove stressors that are within your control so you can take action! For example, if your dog gets anxious when looking out the window, simply close the blinds, put a window film up or redirect their attention to something more calming like a Kong or lick mat.
- IDENTIFY STRESSORS YOU CAN MANAGE: Most stressors are beyond our control, like noises outside the house/flat. But you can still help your dog cope with these triggers. For example, having a radio on during the day can provide soothing background noise, helping to drown out external sounds that triggers your dog.
In short, creating a stress list empowers you to make positive changes and support your dog through stress management. And all you have to do is listing everything you know stresses your dog out, big and small. Best of all you can do this at home TODAY!
(PS if my handwriting looks like a child’s I’m sorry but I can’t do anything about it. Also I love colour
