If your dog easily gets frustrated when he doesn’t get his way, a lick mat can be a life saver.
Lick mats are also amazing for calming dogs that are anxious or scared. They help build impulse control and calmness. And they are easy to fit in to a bag, or even a pocket so you can take them everywhere. It’s a super versatile tool that is always in my cupboard.
WHAT TO PUT ON LICK MATS? I use anything sticky that I know my dog loves in order to make an irresistible lick mat. The more stressed my dog is the better stuff I need to add on the lick mat. I usually try to stay away from super unhealthy stuff and if possible use my dog’s food, but sometimes the unhealthy stuff is what works best.
So here are my top tips for lick mat fillings:
✅ Raw food
✅ Greek yoghurt
✅ Kefir
✅ Squeezy cheese
✅ Any meat or liver pate
Do you want to know my favourite brands of lick mats?
Lickimat
This company is one of the originals when it comes to lick mats and their stuff are great. The Soother Lickimat is great for separation anxiety, the one called Splash is awesome in the shower but I prefer the TUFF series since it’s easier to wash in the machine.

WHEN TO USE THEM?
Lick mats are my go-to calming activity when I know my dog will experience a short burst of stress. The best time to give a lick mat is just before you know your dog will get excited, frustrated or anxious.
This is a tool that’s best to use when you are present, or if you are away for a very short time. Lick mats can be torn apart quite easily so you want to take it away as soon as they’re done.
Best of luck with your lick mat adventure and don’t forget to tag me in posts when you have found your favourite. I would LOVE to see it. ❤️
