The more I learn about dog food and dog health, the more curious I get. Two of my greatest teachers on this subject, Dr. Karen Becker and Rodney Habib, have long shared amazing tips on how to improve your dog’s health. One ingredient that keeps popping up in their recipes is turmeric. That’s why I decided to investigate this golden herb a bit more to figure out, why is it so great? Below, I’ll share all my findings, including a simple recipe for Golden Paste.
The Benefits of Turmeric for Dogs
Turmeric contains curcumin, a compound renowned for its medicinal properties. Here are some of the ways it can benefit your dog:
Reduce Inflammation
Curcumin is a powerful anti-inflammatory agent, making it ideal for dogs with arthritis or joint pain. A 2014 study published in BioFactors found that curcumin reduces inflammation by inhibiting certain enzymes linked to inflammatory processes (BioFactors).
Rich in Antioxidants
Curcumin acts as an antioxidant, combating free radicals that can damage cells. This supports overall cellular health and may help reduce the risk of chronic diseases.
Supports Digestive Health
Turmeric stimulates bile production, aiding fat digestion and promoting a healthy gut. For dogs prone to digestive upset, this can be a game-changer.
Natural Pain Relief
For dogs experiencing pain from injuries or chronic conditions, curcumin’s natural pain-relieving properties can provide much-needed relief without the side effects of conventional painkillers.
A 2012 study in BMC Veterinary Research found that curcumin could effectively reduce joint pain and improve mobility in dogs with arthritis (Veterinary Research). Another study showed its potential to combat oxidative stress, which is linked to ageing and chronic diseases (PubMed).
Golden Paste Recipe
Turmeric on its own is amazing, but if you combine it with coconut oil and black pepper, it becomes a superfood for your dog. Making Golden Paste at home is simple, affordable, and requires just a few ingredients. This is how you do it!
Ingredients:
- 65g organic turmeric powder
- 240ml water (plus an extra 120ml if needed)
- 80ml unrefined coconut oil
- 2–3 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper
Instructions
1. Combine Turmeric and Water
In a saucepan, mix the turmeric powder with 240ml of water over low heat. Stir continuously for 7–10 minutes until it forms a thick paste. If the mixture becomes too thick, add up to an additional 120ml of water to achieve the desired consistency.
2. Add Coconut Oil and Black Pepper
Once the paste has thickened, remove it from the heat. Stir in the coconut oil and freshly ground black pepper until fully incorporated.
3. Cool and Store
Allow the mixture to cool. Transfer the paste into a clean, airtight glass jar and refrigerate. The paste can be stored in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
How to Use Golden Paste
Turmeric is potent, so it’s important to introduce it slowly into your dog’s diet to avoid gastrointestinal upset.
Serving Guidelines:
- Small dogs: 1/4 tsp per day
- Medium dogs: 1/2 tsp per day
- Large dogs: 3/4 tsp per day
- Giant dogs: 1 tsp per day
Split the daily amount into multiple servings and mix it into your dog’s meals. Always consult your veterinarian before starting any new supplement, especially if your dog has underlying health conditions or is on medication.
Things to Keep in Mind
Coconut Oil and Black Pepper: These enhance the bioavailability of curcumin, ensuring your dog reaps the full benefits.
Freshness Matters: Store your paste in the fridge and use it within two weeks for the best results.
Check for Allergies: Monitor your dog for any adverse reactions, like an upset stomach or itching.
Conclusion
Golden Paste is a natural, affordable way to support your dog’s health, from reducing inflammation to boosting digestion. Whether your dog is a senior struggling with arthritis or simply needs an immune boost, this simple addition to their diet can make a big difference.
